Waterloo grew up alongside Kitchener as a Mennonite farming settlement in the early 1800s and became a centre of insurance and education through the late 19th century — Manulife and Sun Life both have deep roots here. Today the city is best known as Canada's tech capital, anchored by the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, with a startup ecosystem that earned it the nickname "Silicon Valley North."
