Serving Dresden, Chatham-Kent County
Dresden is best known as the home of Josiah Henson — the formerly enslaved minister and abolitionist whose memoirs inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe's character of Uncle Tom. Henson founded the Dawn Settlement here in 1841 as a haven for fugitive slaves arriving via the Underground Railroad; the Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site preserves his home and several original Dawn Settlement buildings.
